what: in Nigeria, individual volunteering by the young has become an increasingly frequent practice, spreading throughout the country and generating positive results for local community development. About 80% of all Nigerian youth are into volunteering their services. According to TakingITglobal there are over 20,000 individuals and organisations doing volunteer work in areas such as crime, violence, drug abuse, trafficking in persons, the environment, religion, cultures, etc.

how: ICT is also playing a major role in this process, as many young people involve themselves in the field of information technology by working with local organisations or aiding in the local work of international organisations. Some of them have set up websites and their own webpages, a few examples of which are: www.gbengasesan.com, www.netaid.org, www.onevillagefoundation.org, www.oneworld.net, etc.

results: the individual commitment to volunteering services has led to a reduction in the unemployment rate among youth (nearly 98% of young Nigerians are unemployed) and the crime rate, especially in the Southwest zones. On the one hand, local and international organisations are helping through assistance programs, providing internet access, participating in events, and with grants and scholarships. On the other hand, young people are putting a great deal of effort into volunteering for their communities because they see greater opportunities coming from ICT.
