An apple can be grown in very different ways: it can be cultivated with pesticides or without them. Your T-shirt can be put on the market thanks to workers’ exploitation (sweatshops) or using child labour, or in a proper, ethical way…SC asks us to consider issues that go beyond the act of purchasing and look at the world behind the products. In order to suggest a practical approach to what might be responsible consumer ‘shopping behaviour’, we have built a virtual department store where all kinds of goods and services are displayed. This should NOT be considered as an exhaustive list! Nor does it have ANY commercial purpose. The aim is to enhance a critical approach and orientate the consumers’ choice, providing an overview – purely as an example - of what is actually available on the market in terms of sustainable goods and services.
The YXC virtual dep’t store has a quite traditional lay-out: the taking care section hosts clothes & accessories, health & beauty; the getting around/away section groups transport and travel; in housing you will find interior design proposals (furniture, accessories, etc.), energy devices, real estate services, etc; training & fun displays arts & music, school & office, sport & leisure goods/services; financial services (banking & insurance, fund raising); community services (aid and solidarity organisations, repairing & recycling services, etc.); and global village (magazines and books, internet cafés, etc.). |
