While music file-sharing over the Internet continues to be a controversial topic… - almost half of the online youth worldwide have downloaded music from the Internet. According to a study carried out by Ipsos-Reid in December 2000, 47% of teenagers and young adults (aged 12 –24) downloaded an MP3 file over the past month. (1)
- 55% of young males aged 12 to 17 had downloaded a music file from the Internet, while females of the same age were slightly behind, at 41%;
- nearly 90% of all youths who had already downloaded a music file said they would do it again over the next 12 months, compared to 48% of those who had yet to experiment with downloading music;
- the study also revealed that music file-sharing has become a global trend. Canada and Sweden have the most enthusiastic young file swappers – 66% of Canadian youths and 64% of Swedish youths downloaded music files;
- over half of the young Internet users in Taiwan, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, South Korea, and urban Mexico also said they had downloaded their favourite music tracks from the Internet.
(1) The ‘Keeping Pace with the Future of Music Distribution’ study, carried out by Ipsos-Reid, covered 16 countries. Results were based on the answers from teenagers and young adults aged between 12 and 24.
