what: the Global Sports Alliance (GSA) is an international sport and environment organisation launched in Japan in 1999. GSA is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to “promote awareness and actions on global environmental problems for athletes and sport lovers”. gsa actively promotes the realisation of a sustainable society with one billion sport lovers around the world so that future generations can also enjoy sport as an essential part of human life.
who: GSA is a multi-sectoral initiative with a wide range of supporters and participants. the directors are retired and active professional athletes and coaches as well as car racers, TV anchors, musicians, artists, singers, actors and company executives. The sponsors of GSA include Sony, Toyota, Fuji, Xerox, Pricewaterhouse Cooper Ltd., TFE inc., Ebay Japan etc. It also has appointed a special advisor, Theodore Oben, Youth and Sport program officer for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
how: GSA in co-operation with UNEP, has developed a project called Dream Camps or “nature and sport camps”. The Dream Camps are meant to combine sport training with environmental education such as recycling, cleanup and reforestation. The 1rst camp took place in Nairobi, Kenya in 2001.
awards: in november 2001, the GSA and UNEP co-organized the G-forse2001 conference in Tokyo, Japan. This conference was meant to provide “a platform for people in sports communities to solve environmental problems”. Several G-forse2001 awards were presented during the conference. These awards are given out every two years for the reports that best “pose acute and original ideas, touch people and give them new values on the sport and environment theme.”
networking: G-forse also serves as a portal site for sports and environment. A questionnaire is being conducted by NPO Global Sports Alliance (GSA) and is designed to assess awareness about sports and the global environment. The data collected will be used as a valuable resource at the Global Forum for Sports and Environment to be held in Tokyo from 14 november 2003, organized by GSA and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
