what: ‘El Got de la Festa’ means ‘the party mug’. It refers to an initiative started in 1997 by the UAB (Universitat Autňnoma de Barcelona) that promotes the use of reusable cups to serve drinks at the annual University party. Since then, mugs have been sold at the yearly university parties at the price of €1. Participants can decide to take their mug home with them or to return it at the end of the party and get their money back.
ecodesign: these special mugs are designed to be attractive and appealing, so that young people are motivated to keep their cup with them. The graphic aim is to increase people’s awareness about the importance of recycling and the mugs’ logo often recalls this concept.
results: it has been calculated that thanks to this campaign, waste from the parties has been reduced by as much as 0.3 kg per person, equal to about 3m2 of compacted plastic for all the party.
related initiatives: at the UAB people decided to go further in greening the University’s annual party. Hence, other initiatives have been developed. Among these:
follow-up: given the success of the UAB initiative, in 2001 the Barcelona city administration financed the publication of a Sustainable Party Guide ( Les Festes més Sostenibles ): tips for party organisers on how to minimise environmental impact and maximise fun!
- the installation of Green Points ( Els Punts Verds): buses that support the distribution of the mugs and offer other kinds of services, such as medical assistance, bike parking and other information on party activities, etc.;
- La Paella Compostable, to encourage organic garbage collection and the use of recyclable dishes for serving paella.
