company: Migros started business in Zurich in 1925. Today it is a large company merchandising a wide variety of products ranging from food to electronics, from home furniture to cosmetics. It still maintains its original values and ideals: social capital, co-operative form, cultural percentage, and the choice to not sell alcohol and tobacco are some of the aspects that characterise Migros.
DIY tips: do you enjoy working with an electric drill, hammer and nails? If the answer is yes, then Migros is probably the place you are looking for. Migros has published a collection of DIY manuals – available online - to help you realise your ideas and make your house more comfortable, safer and greener. You will find tips on how to insulate your house in a way that avoids energy dispersion and consequent waste, how to install a solar energy system, and so on.
sustainable features: from the beginning Migros was conceived as a ‘not just for business’ firm. Two examples of this special vision are:
- responsible forestry products: Migros’ line for the home and garden offers a wide range of furniture in FSC (‘Forest Stewardship Council’) certified wood. By buying these certified products you are providing an incentive for environmentally and socially responsible forest management. Currently, almost 50% of ‘Do it + Garden’ Migros products are certified. Among these you can find wood for parquet, garden furniture, wood for DIY or for barbecue, etc.
- cultural percentage: Migros dedicates a part of its profits to cultural, educational, and social and economic science research. One percent of Fédération des coopératives Migros (FCM) total sales volume and 0.5% of its regional co-operatives retail sales profits is spent for this purpose. The popular ‘Steps’ dance festival is one of the initiatives supported by the ‘cultural percentage’ along with other less well known initiatives such as the artistic magazine ‘Material’ or the musical label ‘Coffee’.
