CAMPAIGNS & INITIATIVES
Bicycle Film Festival - featuring films, interactive exhibits, and live music focusing on bicycle culture. Started in NYC in 2002, debuting in 2004 in San Francisco, the Film Festival has plans to expand to LA, Tokyo, and London. [www.bicyclefilmfestival.com]
Clever commuting - is a project, financed by the European Commission (DG Environment), to promote practices as responsible car use as well as the public transport use. European Car Free Day - public transport, cycling and living streets/greenways were chosen as common themes for the whole of Europe. A list of other themes was also available for the other days and of course the Car Free Day on Sunday 22nd of September was the highlight of the whole Mobility Week! 427 cities and towns (241 participating +186 supporting) were involved in 2002. European Mobility Week (EMW) - based on the success and lessons learnt from the International Car Free Day ("In town without my car!") initiated in France in 1998, the EMW (supported by the European Commission's DG Environment) was launched on 19th April 2002 in Brussels (during the Green Week). GITAS (Giovani Informati su Traffico, Ambiente e Salute) – Informed Youth on Traffic, the Environment and Health is a website that has been set up in Emilia-Romagna, Italy to address these issues and induce people, namely youth, to change their mobility behaviours. Velo Mondial 2006 - will take place in Cape Town, South Africa (5-10 March). Previous Velo Mondial Conferences (Montreal 1992 and Amsterdam 2000) have evaluated the impact of the automobile over the last century, and have formulated plans for the implementation of healthier and more sustainable transport systems worldwide. Walkingbus - lets a group, or 'bus', of children walk from home to school each morning quickly and safely under the guidance of trained adult supervisors. It represents an excellent alternative to the school run in the car. Walking Bus is an initiative developed in Great Britain by experts from the Pedestrian Association.
