PUBLIC TRANSPORT
International association of public transport (UITP) - is persuaded that adequately addressing the highly complex challenges of sustainable mobility depends on the co-ordination of all stakeholders, as well as integrating environmental, societal and economic concerns in core decision-making policy framework. The website is full of interesting information, news, reports, position papers, and more… [www.uitp.com] YXC
Ticket to the future - mobility is a fundamental necessity of 21st century living and brings access to jobs, markets, education, health care and other primary services and leisure. However, no one mode can satisfy all the urban transport needs either today or in the future. Therefore a balance must be struck between collective and individual transport, taking into account economic, environmental and societal issues in order for any level of sustainable development to be achieved. From public transport to integrated mobility - the 55th World Congress of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has taken place in Madrid, Spain, from 4 to 9 May 2003. Mobility issues are experiencing major changes and they are well described on this article. This changing context brings with it the need for continuous improvements and a diversification of transport services to satisfy passengers’ needs. The UITP Mobility & City Transport Exhibition has been held in parallel with the World Congress. [www.uitp.com/Events/madrid/mediaroom/Articles/integrated_mobility.htm] Mobility's energy costs - UITP’s Policy Board urges governments worldwide to adopt policies that promote modes of transport which are less greedy for energy, such as walking, cycling and public transport. Indeed, according to UITP’s Millennium Cities Database for Sustainable Transport, public transport is three times more energy-efficient than the private car. Other policies that can influence transport’s expenditure on energy include urban densification, which ensures shorter daily journeys. Very interesting article.
