WALKING

America Walks - is a US national coalition of local advocacy groups dedicated to promoting walkable communities. [www.americawalks.org]

Intelligent Space Partnership (ISP) - is a centre of expertise on walking as a transport mode. Promoting walking is an essential part of the move to more sustainable transport. ISP works to help improve public space, minimise social risks and maximise economic benefits. The practice uses science-based methods to turn pedestrian movement from an undervalued resource into a tangible and manageable asset. [www.intelligentspace.com]

International Walk to School (I-walk) - in October 2003, more than 2.5 million children, parents, and community leaders from 29 countries around the world joined together in celebration of International Walk to School Day. The goal of the walk varies from community to community. Some walks rally for safer and improved streets, some to promote healthier habits and some to conserve the environment… [www.iwalktoschool.org]

Living Streets - formerly called the Pedestrians Association, works in the UK to improve the quality of streets and public spaces that people on foot can use and enjoy. The Pedestrians Association formed in Great Britain in 1929, making Living Streets one of the oldest pedestrian advocacy organisations on the planet. [www.livingstreets.org.uk]Move4Health - is primarily an expert campaigning organisation working towards making the physical, cultural, political and social environment more conducive for people being active. It also publicises how activity can promote health and wellbeing, tackle the burden of psychological and physical disease, and work towards reducing health inequalities in the UK. [www.move4health.org.uk]

PedNet - the internet mailing list on pedestrian issues, is a joint project of Ottawalk and the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition. Participants include pedestrian advocates, planners and professionals from around the world. [www.flora.org/pednet]

“Walking for Health Initiative” (WHI) – OK you already know about the benefits of walking. Perhaps you are ready to start and want to know more about walking in your area or how to build up the habit… This website offers information, support and encouragement to complete beginners, existing walkers and health and leisure professionals. [www.whi.org.uk] recommended

Young TransNet - uses IT and the Internet to assist children and young people in transport research and action. The long term aim of Young TransNet is to increase walking, cycling and the use of public transport, and to reduce motor traffic. [www.youngtransnet.org.uk]
