company: American Apparel
country: USA
product: T-shirts
distribution: worldwide, via Internet

who: American Apparel is an international T-shirt manufacturer and distributor that has chosen the path of social activism while doing business. Based on the concept of socialist-capitalist fusion, it aims at rebuilding the system of T-shirt manufacturing from the ground up: seeking profits through innovation, and not through worker exploitation.

sustainable features: bucking the trend in globalisation that seeks profits through cheap offshore labour, 100% of what American Apparel produces is sewn in its building, based in Los Angeles, without subcontractors.

new initiatives: American Apparel’s latest innovation is the so-called ‘Sustainable Edition’, a new line of shirts made with 100% USDA Certified Organic Cotton. This is an initiative to address the environmental crisis caused by the use of pesticides during the cotton cultivation process. Throughout the next four years, the company has planned to convert over 80% of its cotton consumption to sustainable cotton (organic or quasi-organic).
